The Untold Story of “Song Kang Before”: From Ordinary Part-Time Worker to Global Hallyu Icon

Before he was crowned the “Son of Netflix,” before millions of fans tracked his every move on social media, and long before he graced global screens as a demonic heartthrob or monster-fighting hero, Song Kang was simply a young man trying to figure out his path.

The phrase “Song Kang before” conjures curiosity about what the South Korean superstar’s life looked like prior to overnight fame. His journey from an ordinary student working modest part-time jobs to an international acting powerhouse is a classic story of quiet perseverance, accidental rejections, and a late-blooming passion for cinema.

1. A Childhood Rooted in Art and Athletics

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in a household that naturally bridged physical discipline and artistic expression. His father was an artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher.

Unsurprisingly, his early years involved a mix of sports and music. He learned the piano from his mother and even won local elementary school competitions. However, despite growing up around athletic influences, Song Kang humorously admitted that he never felt cut out for professional sports. Instead, he spent his youth exploring various interests, from playing video games and reading to watching classic comedy movies.

2. Turning Down K-Pop: The Road Not Taken

One of the most surprising pieces of trivia about Song Kang’s pre-debut era is that he almost became a K-pop idol.

Thanks to his striking features and tall frame, talent scouts from multiple idol agencies frequently approached him during his late teens and early twenties. In the highly competitive Korean entertainment industry, many young trainees jump at these offers. However, Song Kang repeatedly turned them down.

“I didn’t want to be an idol,” he later reflected. “My heart was set entirely on acting.”

This conviction kept him grounded, even when it meant facing years of uncertainty while other peers debuted quickly on music stages.

3. The Hustle: Part-Time Jobs and Modest Beginnings

Before breaking into the entertainment industry, Song Kang experienced the realities of everyday life just like anyone else. During his university years at Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts, he took on various part-time gigs to support himself.

In later interviews, he fondly—and candidly—recalled working odd jobs that paid as little as 5,000 won per hour. Despite making very little money, his priority was always his family. With his modest earnings, he would save up to buy small gifts for his parents, such as a skincare face pack for his mother or thermal underwear for his father to brave the chilly Korean winters.

4. Stepping into the Spotlight (2017)

Song Kang’s official entry into the entertainment industry came in 2017, when he signed with Namoo Actors and made his television debut in the tvN romantic comedy The Liar and His Lover, playing a supporting role as a band guitarist. Around the same time, he appeared in music videos for artists like The ADE and Suran, slowly building his screen presence.

He didn’t become an overnight sensation instantly. For the next couple of years, he paid his dues through small supporting roles (such as a motorcycle delivery guy cameo in Touch Your Heart) and variety show appearances, notably charming audiences as a fixed cast member in the mystery variety show Village Survival, the Eight alongside Yoo Jae-suk and BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

5. The Turning Point

The trajectory of Song Kang’s life shifted forever when he beat out massive competition to land his first major lead role as Hwang Sun-oh in Netflix’s Love Alarm (2019). That role transformed him from a promising rookie into a globally recognized face.
