Behind the Screen: The Childhood and Early Roots of Song Kang

Long before he earned the title of South Korea’s “Son of Netflix” or captivated millions with his intense gazes in global hits like Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet, imaginative boy growing up in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

While fans worldwide know him for his striking visuals and versatile acting, his early life tells a grounded story of athletic roots, artistic exposure, and a surprisingly winding path toward the spotlight.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a close-knit family consisting of his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. Athletics and creativity ran deep in his household, creating an environment that quietly shaped his physical discipline and appreciation for the arts.

His father was an artistic gymnast, and his grandfather had a background in wrestling, meaning physical fitness and movement were practically second nature in his family. On the flip side, his mother worked as a piano teacher, filling their home with melody and structure. This unique mix of sports-driven stamina and artistic sensibility would later become a superpower for an actor who effortlessly transitions from high-octane action roles to delicate, emotional romances.

The Architect That Never Was

Every child goes through phases of dream-chasing, and Song Kang’s early ambitions had nothing to do with standing in front of a camera. Growing up, he was captivated by structural design.

In past interviews, Song Kang revealed that after seeing striking pictures of architecture and interior spaces, his childhood dream was to become an architect or a furniture designer. However, his practical streak got the better of him early on; he humorously recalled giving up on the aspiration because he simply had “no idea where he needed to start” studying for it. Little did he know, the spatial awareness and expressive detail required in design would translate well into building complex, layered characters.

Discovering the Silver Screen

The turning point that planted the seed for his acting career came from a classic cinematic masterpiece. Like millions of teenagers around the world, a young Song Kang was spellbound watching Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997).

The raw emotion, power, and magnetism of DiCaprio’s performance left a lasting impression on him. It was the first time he looked at a movie screen and thought deeply about the craft of acting—sparking a quiet ambition that he would eventually pursue during his studies at Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts.

Turning Down K-Pop for the Stage

Given his towering height (1.86m / 6’1″) and striking, model-esque visuals, it comes as no surprise that the entertainment industry came knocking long before his official debut.

During his youth and college years, Song Kang was frequently scouted by K-pop idol agencies. In an era where many young trainees transition from idol pipelines into acting, Song Kang took a different route. He repeatedly turned down idol casting offers because his heart was set entirely on acting. He wanted to hone his craft authentically, a choice that required patience before landing his breakout television debut in 2017’s The Liar and His Lover.

From Quiet Kid to Global Icon

Looking back at Song Kang’s childhood and youth reveals a young man who was shaped by contrasting forces: the physical rigor instilled by an athletic father, the quiet introspection of a piano-teacher mother, and an imagination that ranged from designing buildings to losing himself in cinematic stories.
